Implements more of the ical spec than other plugins - further implementations (eg: last day of year, 2nd to last monday of month etc) can be requested, and may be coming! Generates css tags for hcalendar miccroformat support. List upcoming recurring or single events, notes, journal, freebusy information from many ical feeds. Offers a range of defaults and customisation options. Including the possiblity of grouping events by month/week/day or many other for presentation and styling. Offers your viewers the option to subscribe or add the events or the whole calendar to their calendars (google or other). NB: Plugin requires php 5 >= 5.2, and the php DATETIME Class enabled (this is standard in php 5.2). You may get a parse error,something like "syntax error, unexpected T_VARIABLE in...." if you are not on a version of PHP that has the "clone" function. The Code Styling Localisation Plugin is very useful for this. = More to come = ATTENTION: Due to problems with themes who strongly specify list item css in many different ways, I am thinking of removing the hardcoded list structure with the table cells (you could add it back in using the before/after fields in the admin area if you wanted). I liked it ecuase I thought it was more 'semantic' than just some breaks here and there to force the bits onto new lines. Many are available on the web and can be "sorted" into your calendar: public holidays, world events, school terms, eccentric dates etc. * Will handle any html in the text fields. * Allocate fields to columns and order within the columns and use css for example to float end time up next to start time. * Offers a refresh link with date and time last cached - may be useful if your calendar has many updates on one day a week, with long gaps inbetween. Prevents unnecessary downloads. * Optionally choose timezone. * Add your own before/after content or styling (eg: SUMMARY as h3 ) for each field. = Styling = * Works out the box with a default css style as well as many other possibilities: * Allows grouping of events (eg: daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly, by seasons, by years for readability and styling. * Default basic css provided, plus lots of css tags for innovative styling (eg: by group of dates, or for recurring events, or untimed (all day) events. * A default set of transparent(for different backgrounds) images is provided for the additional "icon" fields. * In the before and after options for each field, use following tags only : <p> <br /> <hr /> <h2> <h3> <h4> <h5> <h6> <strong> < em> <address>. * These tags along with the possibility of having your own plugin css file should be more than adequate for your styling needs. = Date, Times and Timezone = * Note: wordpress 2.8 now allows the timezone to be specified by city which should cater for daylight saving differences. Please check very carefully that times are correct and that you understand what the times should be. * Timezones - there is your server's timezone, the timezone of the calendar files, and your wordpress timezone. The plugin will try for the timezone string (either from wordpress 2.8 or the automatic timezone plugin. Failing that it wiull try for gmt_offset, and attempt to convert it to a timezone string. Failingthat it will use UTC time. If anyone needs more sophisticated functionality such as allowing a selection of timezones, please contact me. * Locale and language specific date and time formatting is provided. Both the datetime and strftime formats can be used. Note that not all are supported on all servers (particularly not windows). * Wordpress default date and time formats will be defaulted to. If upgrading, you will have to change to these manually if you want them as it will not overwrite your earlier settings until you reset. = Testing = * Can pass URL's, Listtypes and nocache/debug options via the url query string for ease of testing. = Upgrading = * In version 2.5.1 new logic has been added to allow you to keep your old settings while still seeing any new fields or features added. If a feature is meantioned and you do not see it in the config, you may need to "reset" your options. First make a note of any special settings, reset, then reapply your special settings. = General Logic = 1. Check if page has iCal Urls, and then parse URL's (cacheing or refreshing as necessary) 2. Merge events, todo's, notes etc if multiple urls specified 3. Expand recurring events and Limit the total list, so it does not go on for ever 4. Sort by datetime 5. Group (or rather issue grouping code on change of group) if requested 6. Generate any special display situations such as: * If event is all day, remove start time, set css class * If start time equals end time, set end time to empty string * If end date = start date, don't display end date * If url in text, convert to a hyperlink * If location or geo exists and map requested, add a map link to google maps. Include the calendar location if the location text is short, to help google find it. * Allow html in descriptions, and convert any url's to links if not already converted. This version of the plugin has been rewritten significantly, so while ideas have come from a number of sources, in many cases the code is new - developed based on the [RFC 2445](http://www.kanzaki.com/docs/ical/). In various other code scripts originally used, problems were being experienced with Recurrence, Duplications (due to exceptions in Recurrences) and Timezones. Recurrence can be incredibly complex and some plugins opt for simply not implementing many possibilities. Thanks to Gary for identifying that the widget list type format was not being used. * Also tweaked the default widget cssa little so that grouping headings would float to the left for widgets only, in case one wanted to group within the widget (default is not to group). = Version 2.5.9 = * Added pseudo clone function for people not on later versions of php, to mimic the clone command ( as per http://acko.net/blog/php-clone) so they won't get a parse error, but will later get told they need a better version of php! = Version 2.5.8 = * Changed the call to php get_headers (to check if remoteurl exists) to the wordpress wp_remote_get so that people with servers which do not allow remote url open will not get errors. * Changed default css (previous css included as an option, in casae you prefered it - NB you must change name to avoid it getting overwritten later). The default css had some non functioning css where event times were meant to float up next to date, but were not. * Default css now uses opacity to "grey out" events in the past, rather than the same background colour as the 'alt'. The background had confused people as they thought there was some kind of alt error. Note an event is styled as "history" if it has started already, although it may not be finished yet. historical dates only show if either they were earlier on the current day (all events on current day are shown by default) OR a startoffset has been specified. = Version 2.5.7 = * Added multi-url support back into the widget and expanded the field a bit to give more space. NOte: separate url's with commas. * Added more validation around the input there. * Tweaked the default css for the widget slightly to remove any theme related padding or margin's on the table and just use the list item spacing - should give a more consistent look with other widgets = Version 2.5.6 = * Fixed bug where although corrected end date to (end date -1) - spec says all days ends on next day at 00:00:00 for single all days, it was not doing it for multi - days -resulting in an extra day * Adjusted code to ensure that an "already started" multi day event is still listed if it has not finished before current day. (Note: you can also use startoffset=-n where n is an integer to force the start of the list back a few days.) * Attempted to correct for ics generators that do not follow the all day logic as noted [here] (http://www.innerjoin.org/iCalendar/all-day-events.html). The php "WebCalendar" is at fault here too. Unfortunately one can only correct for single day all day events. For multi day, it is not possible to know whether a 2 day event was intended or not, or whether it is a correct implementation of the logic. Take it up with whoever is generating your ics file is this is a problem for you. * Changed css tags slighty to offer hcalendar microformat support: * - basically the fields that had come direct from the ics file were in the original uppercase (eg SUMMARY) however hcalendar says the classes should all be lowercase. * - removed the duplication of some classes from - they are on the . THis was breaking hcalendar. * - The matching css file has been checked - if you had your own css, you may need to check whether you need an adjustment. * - added url css tag for hcalendar support. = Version 2.5.5 = * Fixed bug where check for ical all day, but single day (shows up as day1 start, day 2 end) caused a problem with other dall day, but multi day - we lost the end date! = Version 2.5.4 = * Added warnings about needing to use shortcodes only - replace the ":" with a space in your caledar page if you have not already done so. = Version 2.5.3 = * Made changes to cache folder creation due to possible errors experienced with people on shared servers with php safe mode enabled. If you have problems, add ?debug or &debug to your events page url and refresh. The debug messages may tell what you the problem is with your server. * fixed problem that had crept in that meant the debug option of a url by query string was not working * changed days default to 90, not 30 as many folks just wanting widget do not look at config settings, just widget settings. = Version 2.5.2 = * Really fixed widget timezone now - it was going back to server timezone even though it had worked out the wordpress timezone - problem with bad choice of shortcode default! = Version 2.5.1 = * Fixed bug: Code was added to handle keeping your settings while adding new features and field options. This temporarily showed your updates, but then on next view of config page, the settings were back to default. The recursive merge of old and new settings was defaulting the wrong way. First column is usually the date column, so now can just style the dates differently or the whole event or todo record. You can style entries in many ways (eg style recurring entries differently, as well as by the status. For possible status values - see http://www.kanzaki.com/docs/ical/status.html. You can style by the component type (vevent, vtodo, vjournal, valarm) * added css classes so that you can style past, today and future events differently = Version 2.3.8 = * added some more language information and files, cleaned up some of the translation. * Some people are experiencing timezone problems - this appears to be caused by the use of wordpress's date i18n to localise the formats. Reverting to original code seems to remove the problem. Wordpress seems to wokr with an absolute url however this will cause problems if you ever having to move your blog, so follow the default shown and go relative. eg: to move up - "..\uploads". = Version 2.3.4 = * Added Default Css to cater for themes that use list-style definitions such as background and before content. A reset may be necessary if you have an old version and want to take advantage of new options and defaults. * Removed the line breaks for the widget event summary 'titles' that appear when you hover on the summary. This looks better and does not require any javascript. * Clarified the widget calendar page option and attempted to default it to what you might have called your calendar. You may need to reset to see this happen. = Version 2.3.2 = * Fixed bug if there was a url for the event. (The url is entered as a hyperlink behind the summary text). Currently in google one cannot setup a URL for a event. * Removed testmode comment when iCal url passed in query string, allow possibble "API" use. * Straight after importing events in the timezones specified by the ical file, they will be converted to the timezone of the wordpress installation. This is required for the timezone and datetime functionality. 1. Unzip the folder into your wordpress plugins folder. 2. Activate the plugin through the 'Plugins' menu in WordPress 3. Add one or more [iCal http://yoururl.ics] to a page or post (Note post usage may result in non-validating code, due to multiple occurences of "id" tags on same web page 4. Manage the plugin through the settings screen. = Further tweaks: = 5. Change/salt the css as desired. 6. Check Date and Time formats. Note: language specific date formats depend on the specifications in the Date and Time Formats in the settings area. Wordpress does not set locale, but does do some localisation of the "date" format strings, so use those rather than the strftime strings. 7. Check wordpress timezone, and ics events timezones- Check your wordpress timezone settings are set to what you wnat them to be. The plugin will handle timezone differences and assumes that you want the wordpress timezone as your main timezone, not the ics file timezone 8. play with date and event limits - balance performance against the volume of events you are likely to have. (eg: don't do days=1000 and events=5 if you know that almost always you have about 3 events a month! = Note = The ics file feed must be PUBLIC - if you cannot access it in a browser without being logged in, then the plugin will not be able to access it either. == Frequently Asked Questions == see also the plugin website [Troubleshooting](http://icalevents.anmari.com/troubleshooting/) = How can I control the output of this plugin? = Simplest: Put [iCal http://yoururl.ics] in your page or post. A Default List Type will be used. To combine calendars ala Google style, for example including a public holiday calendar, separate the URL's with commas. [iCal http://yoururl.ics http://anotherurl.ics] To specify another listtype defined in the admin section, add a "listtype=N" where N is the number of the list type that you want. [iCal http://yoururl.ics listtype=2] To list a series of calendars -eg: a different calendar for different groups or classes in sequence: [iCal http://yoururl.ics] [iCal http://anotherurl.ics] Remember to add css for the extra calendars. You can of course have content text between the iCal shortcodes. The admin section (or if wanting to operate standalone - see the Ical_common file.) allows control over many aspects: * the components to include (eg: todo's ) * the component properties, their layout and sequence. Eg select end times, or durations (or both!) * the grouping (we used to just do a monthly grouping, no we allow for many others ) and many more - see the settings page in the wordpress admin section. = What css tags are there? = There is enough css to work out the box, however if you want to style it further, then each iCal field has it's own li class. Plus there are additional derived classes such as * .addtogoogle * .addevent * .icsurl This is not a complete list, please view page source for more. * .alt - alternate rows * .map - to style or hide the map link to google maps * .group - to style any grouping level lists, * .Month, .day etc - if that grouping was chosen * .MonthMMMYY - to style individual groups * .amrcol - to style a subset of event properties * .untimed * .recur - repeating events ... = Why different css tags for widget and page calendars? = Well, if the widget and the calendar happen to occur on the same page then the page will not validate. And Of course allowing for multiple calendars on a page was also tricky! = Can it handle html in the descriptions? = Yes it can - note that google seems to allow you to enter and save html, however if one goes back to edit it, it appears to through the html tags away. Please check your google file before assuming it is a plugin problem. = How often is the calendar checked for new events? = Specify in the admin menu configuration a refresh period or cache value in hours. Loading calendars too frequently can get your server banned, so use your best judgment when setting this value. The cache will refresh using the same filename. If cached file is older than the cache value on the next request, then it will get the file again. It will also refresh the file if the refresh icon is clicked on the calendar page. = Where can I find iCalendar files? = There are many iCalendar sources, such as: * [Apple's iCal library](http://www.apple.com/ical/library/) * [iCalShare](http://www.icalshare.com/) * [Google Calendar](http://calendar.google.com/) = My server does not support `fopen` on URLs. Can I still use this plugin? = As of version 1.9, this plugin supports usage of cURL via WordPress' `wp_remote_fopen` function. Previous versions required the `url-cache` plugin for cURL support, but this is no longer the case. = Event url's? = The ical spec allows for a event URL. Often there is not one in the ics file. The plugin attempts to provide as much information as possible, as compactly as possible, especially when used as a widget. So for example, it provides the description as link title on a link behind the summary field. (Usually a widget would not show the description field). So for listtype 4 only, If there is no URL, and NO default url in the admin configuration(eg: full calendar page) has been specified, then the Plugin will generate a dummy bookmark, with info cursor style and event description as hover text/title.
